Mobile customers buy differently. Does your store see it?

Open your analytics and check the device split. In most stores the phone won against the computer long ago — yet stores are still designed and tested on a big screen, at a desk, with full attention. The mobile customer buys in completely different conditions.

A different screen means different patience

Phone shopping happens in the gaps: in a queue, on a tram, on the couch during a show. Attention is split, and every obstacle — a slow page, a menu that requires surgeon precision, a size chart in a PDF — costs more than on desktop, because leaving is one flick of the thumb.

Typing on a phone is simply tedious. A contact form that takes a minute on a computer can be a wall on a phone. The mobile customer would rather tap than type — and rather ask a short question than read a long page.

Where the mobile path usually breaks

A few points come back in every audit:

  • Photos that can't be zoomed and descriptions hidden in collapsed sections nobody expands.
  • Delivery costs revealed only at checkout — on a phone, few people come back to “think it over”.
  • Forms with a dozen fields and no autofill.
  • Elements covering the content: banners, popups and badly placed chat bubbles that hide the buy button.

A conversation fits the thumb

There is one form of contact the mobile customer knows better than any other: a chat window. It looks like the messenger they use daily, works without leaving the store and needs no forms. A short question, a quick answer with a specific product, an add-to-cart button — that's a path tailored to the phone.

One condition: the conversation must be instant. Mobile sessions are short; an answer “in 4 hours” reaches someone who's long gone. That's why a bot works best on the first line, with a human joining when needed.

Today's test

Take your phone and buy something from your own store — from Google to the thank-you screen. Write down every moment that stopped you, irritated you or made you type. These are exactly the places where you lose customers less patient than yourself, every day.
