The dip between peaks: what to do when the store slows down

Every store has its rhythm: peaks that leave you breathless and dips where the chart can ruin a whole week's mood. You can't charm a dip away with a discount — but you can work through it so the next peak is clearly better than the last.

First: a dip is not a breakdown

Before you start firefighting with promotions, compare the chart with last year. If the drop falls in the same weeks, it's not a problem to fix — it's seasonality to plan around. Panic in a dip leads to the worst pricing decisions: discounts handed out in September can teach customers never to buy at full price again.

The clean-up there's never time for

A dip is the one moment in the year when you can calmly do the things postponed for months:

  • Catalog — fill the gaps in descriptions, dimensions and photos for the products that will matter in Q4.
  • Customer questions — review the conversations and emails of recent months; every repeated question is a hole in your store's content.
  • Purchase path — walk it yourself, on a phone, from Google to “thank you”; remove what gets in the way.
  • Staffing and tools — decide who (or what) will answer customers on November evenings, before those evenings arrive.

Quiet traffic is still traffic

In a dip, transactions drop, but people don't disappear — they browse, compare and postpone decisions “for later”. It's the best moment to collect contacts and threads to close: back-in-stock signups, questions about autumn products, conversations ending with “I'll come back to it”. A store that collects threads in September has someone to come back to in November.

September is also the last calm moment to test tools — a bot deployed and tuned now enters the season proven, not “switched on blind in mid-November”.

The two-week minimum plan

If time is short, do three things: fix your 20 most important product pages, write down answers to the 20 most common customer questions, and decide how the store will answer questions in season — who, when, with what. Each of these done in September pays back many times over in December.
